Landfill Biogas Recovery and Its Contribution to Greenhouse Gas Mitigation

چکیده
This study assesses the biomethane (CH4) generation and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions resulting from municipal solid waste landfilling in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, with a focus on impact of fugitive CH4 operation processes four scenarios: simple dumping (S1), improved management leachate treatment (S2), engineered landfill flaring (S3), energy recovery (S4). The also considered environmental benefits carbon sequestration utilization. LandGEM IPCC FOD models were used to calculate over period 2009–2022, it was found that approximately 18 21 M kg/year released, respectively. potential 51–61 GWh/year. Overall, GHG S2 highest, amounting 409–509 kg CO2-eq/year, while S1 had lower at 397–496 CO2-eq/year. Flaring-captured S3 could reduce by least 55%, using captured for electricity production S4 mitigate 83% emissions. Electricity (S4) avoid significant amounts (−52 −63 CO2-eq/tMSW). suggests gas-to-energy significantly

Greenhouse Gas Mitigation
Overview of Issue In the past two years research has pointed towards the possibility of using urban planning as a tool to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in urban areas. For many focused on the issue of climate change, there is a consensus that atmospheric carbon dioxide should be contained at no more than twice the maximum level of atmospheric carbon dioxide that existed during the pre-industr...
متن کاملGreenhouse gas mitigation in agriculture.
Agricultural lands occupy 37% of the earth's land surface. Agriculture accounts for 52 and 84% of global anthropogenic methane and nitrous oxide emissions. Agricultural soils may also act as a sink or source for CO2, but the net flux is small. Many agricultural practices can potentially mitigate greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, the most prominent of which are improved cropland and grazing land m...
متن کاملGreenhouse Gas Mitigation through Agriculture
Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions can be reduced or atmospheric GHGs sequestered to help reduce the future extent of climate change. Options to do this through agriculture have received increasing attention during the last decade. Some see agriculture as a potential low-cost provider of emission reductions in the near future with additional environmental and income distributional cobenefits. Other...
متن کاملGreenhouse Gas Mitigation of Rural Household Biogas Systems in China: A Life Cycle Assessment
Rural household biogas (RHB) systems are at a crossroads in China, yet there has been a lack of holistic evaluation of their energy and climate (greenhouse gas mitigation) efficiency under typical operating conditions. We combined data from monitoring projects and questionnaire surveys across hundreds of households from two typical Chinese villages within a consequential life cycle assessment (...
متن کاملManure management for greenhouse gas mitigation.
Ongoing intensification and specialisation of livestock production lead to increasing volumes of manure to be managed, which are a source of the greenhouse gases (GHGs) methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O). Net emissions of CH4 and N2O result from a multitude of microbial activities in the manure environment. Their relative importance depends not only on manure composition and local management...
